How to loan people money online?

Learn how you can loan people money online legally in India through RBI-regulated P2P platforms, along with the protections that apply in 2026.

How to loan people money online?

When you have surplus money, keeping it in a savings account is one way to earn interest on it. P2P lending offers another option, where you can loan people money online and earn interest on the loans you fund.

Lending money for interest on a P2P lending platform, however, comes with legal and compliance requirements. An RBI-regulated P2P platform provides the structure for connecting lenders and borrowers, while you decide which borrowers to lend to and how much you want to lend.

Before committing your money, an ROI calculator can help you estimate the potential returns from your lending. The amount you can lend and your overall exposure are also subject to RBI rules and limits, including those updated in August 2024.

What makes peer to peer lending a supervised way to loan people money online?

Peer to peer lending is an online marketplace for individuals to lend money directly to borrowers, earning interest on each loan. These platforms must register with the RBI as an NBFC-P2P, a category of non-banking financial company created under the Master Direction of 2017. P2P lending platforms without this Certificate of Registration cannot legally run a public lending marketplace in India.

The platform carries the compliance load, verifying borrowers’ identity, running credit assessment and risk profiling, reporting repayment data to credit bureaus, and documenting every loan agreement. The amendments notified in August 2024 sharpened these duties further, requiring monthly public disclosure of non-performing assets (NPAs) and a clear statement that lenders bear the credit risk.

How to loan people money online through a P2P platform?

The process from signup to first repayment follows a fixed sequence on regulated P2P platforms.

  1. Pick a registered platform. Any search for best P2P lending platforms in India should begin with the RBI's published list of registered NBFC-P2Ps. Compare their disclosed NPA figures and credit assessment methods before comparing interest rates.
  2. Complete lender KYC. P2P platforms verify your identity through PAN and an officially valid document, mirroring the checks borrowers face.
  3. Transfer funds through P2P escrow. Money moves only via bank accounts into an escrow account overseen by a bank-promoted trustee. It cannot sit there beyond one business day before deployment.
  4. Choose borrowers and spread your money across multiple loans. Each loan listing shows the borrower’s requirement, interest rate and platform-assessed credit score, with the borrower’s consent. Loan purposes can range from emergency loans to business working capital. The ₹50,000 per-borrower cap also limits the amount you can lend to any single borrower, allowing you to diversify funds across multiple borrowers.
  5. Track repayments. Borrower EMIs flow back through an escrow account into your bank account. You can then choose to lend the repaid amount to another borrower or withdraw it.

Which RBI limits and protections apply when you lend money online?

RBI put in place a few rules that influence your lending amount and your risk appetite.

  • Your lending amount is capped at ₹50,000 to a single borrower and ₹50 lakh across all P2P platforms. If your total lending exceeds ₹10 lakh, you need a CA-certified net worth of at least ₹50 lakh.
  • Each loan can run for up to 36 months, with no secondary market for early exit, so you should lend only what you can keep committed for the loan tenure.

These limits help you understand your exposure, but they don't protect you from losses or guarantee returns.

You must sign a declaration confirming that you understand the credit risk involved, including that neither your principal nor interest is assured. If a borrower defaults, the loss is yours.

You can, however, take precautions to manage your default risk, such as diversifying your lending across borrowers and assessing their credit profiles carefully. These steps can help manage your exposure, but they can't eliminate the risk of loss.

And when you estimate what you could potentially earn after using an ROI calculator, remember that the interest income is generally taxable. Factor in the applicable tax treatment along with the potential return to get a more realistic picture of what your surplus could earn.

Why lending money online works best inside the regulated system

If you have surplus money beyond your immediate needs, P2P lending can give it a more productive role. You can lend a portion to borrowers and earn interest on it through a regulated platform.

So, are you’re willing to lend through P2P lending? Choose a regulated platform, understand where your money is going, and start with an amount that fits comfortably within your overall finances.
